Matthew warned us that working our way through the first thirty pages of the script would be painful. And, indeed, it has been a painstaking and correspondingly exhausting day!
At the beginning of the play almost all of the children are on stage and the action involves a seemingly random swirl of conversations and exchanges between various combinations of them. As you can imagine, this is very difficult to stage. It took us all day. However, by the end we'd arrived at the moment when the structure of the play subtly changes and we begin to focus on more lengthy exchanges between fewer characters, in other words something more like scenes. Phew!
